Grounding is extremely difficult for a great majority of new agers, spiritual seekers, religious believers, people in spiritual crisis, or even psychedelic seekers.
I’ve seen lots of people (this includes my own personal experience) losing touch with the physical reality that sustains our own life and indulge in being lost in a spiritual la-la land, maintaining a narcissistic delusion that a thing called the Universe, or some fatherly/motherly God are there to specifically take care of them, while they do their spiritual journey.
The reality of this belief is that most of them end up losing their jobs (the primary source of revenue to keep them afloat) and ending with no or few money/wealth, not to mention broken relationships, and physical neglect.
There is an old and very wise Arab proverb that reestablishes the balance between the physical and the spiritual realms:Trust In God But Tie Up Your Camel.

This means that while you progress in your spiritual journey you still have to take care of worldly problems and issues. They don’t simply vanish, on the contrary they become harder to deal with, as your grounded energy is being moving upwards.
The way I can find to explain this process of becoming ungrounded is that as you progress in your spiritual journey, you begin to move your conscious energy upwards, giving you a perception of new realities, changing your mind and heart, but at the same time the price to pay is that you begin to lose the energetic bound with Earth.
Not being grounded is like the ground is being pull under your feet, you feel like a leaf in the wind: thrown out off balance very easily, and feeling unsafe and vulnerable, too much in your head.
I Don’t Want To Be Here
For some, grounding can be hard because there is a resistance to be on this plane of existence.
This can be due to several factors, such as previous abuse and trauma in early childhood or residual memories of the unconditional love fields where you came from, or even due to a misplaced belief system that promotes spirituality at the expenses of the physical plane. This attitude can lead to a strong resistance to be grounded and live on an Earthly existence. Some just give up and stay determined in their wonderland, the spiritual la-la.
It is time to awake, grow and develop spiritually, being able to incorporate Earth energy through grounding and enjoy the spiritual/earthly journey you are in.
Symptoms Of Not Being Grounded
We all went through situations where we were not grounded, feeling that the lights were on, but nobody was home, or taking decisions when our emotional compass was broken and later heavily regret the decisions taken.
The symptoms of not being grounded are quite easy to spot. You can find some of them on the list bellow:
- Mood swings
- Being distracted
- Difficulty to handle money and wealth
- Forgetfulness and short term memory loss
- Unable to focus or concentrate
- Inability to finish tasks
- Sensitivity to noise
- Feeling sleepy
- General intolerance
- Not accepting responsibility for ones actions
- Not “feeling at home”
- Not being present
- Being impulsive
- Lots of mental chatter
- People keep hurting your feelings
- Giving too much importance to what others think of you
- Feeling unsatisfied
Why Do I Need To Be Grounded?
Grounding is very important as it enables you to be and stay fully present, aware, focused and relaxed at the same time. It will help you to achieve your goals, enjoy life, home, and work.
Grounding gives that mind-body-spirit alignment and conscious awareness to do and live life at your best ability. When you are able to stay spiritually focused in the body you waste less energy, there are less struggle and effort, and you step with great ease “into the flow” of things.
Another thing I also learned is that grounding helps to boost your self confidence, become more assertive, able to set personal boundaries, and access more harmonious relationships (either with a partner, at work, in your friendships, and so on).
Grounding Is An Essential Spiritual Skill
Grounding should be taught to everyone, especially to new agers, spiritual seekers, religious believers, people in spiritual crisis, or even psychedelic seekers.
I consider grounding an essential skill for all and especially for those who want to further and develop their spiritual path.
Grounding allows you to stay present in your body, rooted like a strong tree, facing people and the environment. It gives you that extra centeredness and balance to face whatever is going on around you. By being grounded you feel much more balanced and peaceful throughout the day and enjoying your life.
Benefits Of Being Grounded
Some of the benefits of grounding that you can enjoy on a daily basis:
- More happiness and emotional balance
- A Stronger sense of self
- More vitality and energy
- Feeling safer and more present in the here in now
- Enjoying yourself
- Being aware of your personal space and boundaries
- Less mental chatter and sharper focus and concentration
- Harmony in relationships and a more satisfying sexual life
- Less fear and less anxiety
- Feeling honorable and integral
What Is Grounding
My way of describing grounding is the process of making room in the body for an expanding and growing consciousness.
When you move your attention (which is normally up in the head or entangled in inner mental chattering) to the body, allowing you to stay present, you are grounding yourself.
If you have practiced any kind of martial art you know this to be true, as if you are not present, you will lose before the combat begins, just by the simple reason that you are not there.
On a more esoteric wording, the more you embody the spirit in matter, the more you are able to connect Heaven and Earth (like the Taoists say) the better you flow though life.
How To Ground Yourself
There are simple and effective techniques to ground yourself on a daily basis. Of course different people use different techniques to stay grounded. You have to try and choose the ones that suit you. Be mindful of the different effects they have on you. Retain the techniques that work better on you.
- Carrying crystals in your pocket
- Being with nature
- Tree hugging
- Walking barefoot on grass and in the sand
- Physical activities like running, chi kung, swimming, yoga, dancing and gardening
- Eating heavy foods
- Drink wine in moderation (one or two glasses)
- Some types of guided meditations
- Work with your hands
- Clay handling and sculpting
- Breathing exercises
- Focus attention on your body (I like to focus on the feet)
- Sexual activity
- Painting and drawing
- Having a massage
- Practice a martial art
- Be aware and pay attention of what surrounds you
Advanced Grounding Techniques
Besides the tips above there are more advance techniques which have a more and deeper effect.
