Why Is it So Hard To Ditch One’s Personal Beliefs?
Have you noticed that in stories and in movies all the ghosts wear white sheets on top of them? Why is that? A ghost has no substance, and as such it can’t be seen. The only way for it to be seen is by wearing something.
The Ego functions the same way as ghosts. The Ego needs to wear something to become, to be. The Ego needs a Mask (a Persona) to cover itself, to be.
Social conversations might start at that level, “Who are you?”, or “What do you do for a living?”. The Ego needs these questions to identify, to label the other, to put him in a “box”, in order to have the illusion of knowing the other. In reality what the Ego does is to meet the other’s beliefs, what they are wearing on top of their Ego, the other’s Masks.
It is clear now that the Ego needs beliefs to dress up, to be something, to affirm itself as: jew, liberal, atheist, hippie, white, Christian, feminist, capitalist, female, Hindu, communist, black, deist, male, conservative, Muslim, fascist, and so on. Then the Ego can say “I am ________ ” (feel free to fill the space with what you think you are).
Your Beliefs Are Your Identity
As the Ego identifies with a certain set of beliefs, it begins to be those beliefs so much that they become its core identity.
Those beliefs, nourished and loved by you, are the invisible chains to Ego bondage and society Authoritarian Structures.
Being identified with one’s beliefs makes the job much easier for the people who are responsible for controlling and indoctrinating you, the Social Engineers (including your own Ego).
What happens when you feel that your beliefs are being threatened? At the same time you begin to feel that your identity too is being threatened. When this happens the Ego goes into DEFCON 1, and all the defense mechanisms go in full alert.
A threat to Ego’s identity is felt as Ego’s death. The Ego will summon and use all its energy and defense mechanisms to avoid that to happen.
The three main and most archaic defense mechanisms that the Ego has at its disposal are: you fight back, or you run away to avoid the situation, or if the previous two are not possible, you freeze (there are more sophisticated defenses mechanisms, but they are based on these three).
The 5 Stages of Ego Death and Rebirth
When your Ego feels that the threat is a present and clear “danger” you start a process of retaliation that very much resembles the 5 Stages of Dying from the Kübler-Ross model.
You will move through the following stages as shown in the above picture: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.
The new information and facts begin to mount and definitely challenge your old beliefs. One of the two positions will have to give up . This can have to two consequences, either you delude yourself reaffirming that the old facts and information are valid, or you begin to accept the new information and facts as valid, and you go through the five stages.
The purpose of showing you the 5 Stages is to help you on how to move through each stage with more awareness and less emotional turmoil. Let’s dive into the 5 Stages and know them in closer detail.
The first reaction is denial. At this point the person begins to notice that the information, or the perception is somewhat mistaken, but clings to the old false belief that sustains a more comfortable reality that is easier to “digest”.
This looks very much like Cognitive Dissonance:
Cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time; performs an action that is contradictory to their beliefs, ideas, or values; or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas or values.
The picture above gives a sequence on how the process of denial is initiated and how stress is avoided to maintain the old belief.
At this stage it is very common to exhibit reactions that dismiss anything that goes against conventional wisdom. The information presented might be labeled as crazy talk or conspiracy theory.
The bottom line is that, no one likes to admit that they are wrong, much less admit that they have been fooled, so it is infinitely easier to deny the new information rather than it is to embrace it. Denial gives the option of pretending that there is not “monster in the room”.
At this stage, it’s quite common for most people to believe in the official narratives conveyed by the authorities: either political, scientific, social or religious. In plus, these narratives are not to be questioned, and should be taken seriously. For some, authorities shouldn’t be questioned . For others, the information shouldn’t be questioned because it is the word of God or was obtained through spiritual channeling.
Most people don’t question new information, either by laziness, or because they fear to be on the spotlight and be seen as crazy or strange by others, preferring to go along with the official narrative.
When denial is not working you become frustrated because your “truth” is not being taken seriously. You begin to project the “bad” and the “wrong” on the outside, in other groups or in other people.
Certain psychological responses of a person undergoing this phase would be: “Why me? It’s not fair!”; “How can this happen to me?”; “Who is to blame?”; “Why would this happen?”.
The picture above gives you the sequence of how the process of denial is initiated and how frustration is avoided in order to maintain the old belief.
If the content issue is related to gender, for sure the blame will go to the opposite gender. If the issue is religious, the blame will have to fall on the other God and religion. The same with politics, the fault is on the other party, or the government, or the terrorists.
Anger in the end is just the cover up for the fact that your Ego is really hurt due to your precious beliefs identification being under heavy fire. You spend lots of energy either attacking or defending it , and quickly you will get depleted and tired.
A good and efficient strategy at this stage would be to redirect all the anger energy towards factual research into the issue and begin to draw new conclusions. More people are beginning to embrace this line of action (and maintain their sanity).We change our behavior when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing. The situation reached a point where both old and new beliefs are on a same level of importance. The person tries to compromise with the hope that further grief can be avoided
The person might have behaviors like: “I’d give anything to go back.” Or: “If only that was true, I could be in peace and be a better person!”
This stage is the last resort for the old belief, and if it fails the old belief will “die”, followed by the depression stage.
The depression is the stage where you realize that the old belief is wrong or defective, or false. You feel down and get the feeling that you are betrayed by yourself.
There is despair and you might say: “I’m so sad, why bother with anything?”; “It is gone, so what’s the point?”; “I can’t go on, why go on like this?”
With the death of the belief also go the energy and motivation that were attached to that belief. You may become silent and withdrawn, and spend time sad and sullen.
This stage is necessary to reorganize, regroup and amass new inner energy to finally accept the new belief.
This is the point where you now become comfortable with the belief and oncoming reality. You begin to say to yourself: “It’s going to be okay.”; “I can’t fight it; I may as well prepare for it.” and people will start to notice the light in your eyes has returned as confidence returns.
Best Spiritual Strategy To Deal With Beliefs Into Spiritual Awakening
We saw that the main problem is that the level of consciousness is centered on the Ego level, and as such the Ego will attach itself to contents, beliefs in this case, to have an identity.
What I have witnessed is, when people are able to move the focus of consciousness from the Ego to the Self, a miracle happens.
The Self can accommodate beliefs but it is not attached to them, can ditch them without any problem, or can go through the 5 stages.
The other thing that happens when the focus of consciousness is moved to the Self happens on the level of identity. The Self doesn’t need content to have an identity. The crucial message from this article is the moving the conscious move of focus from the Ego to the Self. In itself is a dramatic step towards Awakening and encapsulate what Carl Jung called “Self Actualization”.
